Reports To: Plumbing Supervisor / Foreman / Operations Manager
Job Overview:
Under general supervision (or as directed), the WSSC Plumber installs, maintains, inspects, repairs, and tests plumbing systems, water service lines, sewer lines, gas piping, and related fixtures in compliance with WSSC Water codes, local building codes, and safety standards. The plumber ensures reliability, safety, and regulatory compliance of plumbing infrastructure across residential, commercial, and public-sector sites.
Key Responsibilities:

Install, repair, and maintain plumbing systems including water supply lines, drains, waste systems, vents, gas piping, and fixtures (sinks, toilets, faucets, etc.).

Install and service water and sewer utility piping (e.g., service lines, mains, laterals).

Read, interpret, and work from blueprints, schematics, drawings, and specifications.

Perform testing (e.g., pressure tests, leak tests), inspections, and troubleshooting of plumbing systems.

Ensure compliance with the WSSC Water Plumbing & Fuel Gas Code and related local and state plumbing codes.

Obtain, utilize, and maintain required permits and schedule inspections with WSSC Water when applicable.

Coordinate with cross-connection / backflow prevention programs and maintain cross-connection certifications.

Maintain records of work, labor, materials, and time in work order / management systems.

Order, maintain, and inventory plumbing tools, equipment, and materials.

Perform preventative maintenance, routine inspections, and repairs to keep systems operating optimally.

Respond to emergency calls and repairs (e.g. service line breaks, gas leaks) during off-hours as needed.

Train or mentor apprentices or junior plumbers (if applicable).

Adhere to safety protocols, maintain a clean work site, and follow all safety regulations (PPE, confined space, etc.).

Other related duties as assigned by supervision.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Education / Certification / Licensing
- Valid plumber’s license certified by WSSC (Journeyman or Master, depending on role).
- Possession of or ability to obtain cross-connection / backflow prevention certification.
- High school diploma or equivalent; technical or trade school training in plumbing is a plus.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Experience
- Several years of plumbing experience, particularly with water, sewer, gas, and utility piping systems.
- Experience working under WSSC standards, plumbing codes, and inspection procedures is highly desirable.
- Experience interpreting blueprints and plumbing schematics.
- Experience with using computerized maintenance / work order systems.
- Skills

- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Physical stamina: ability to lift and carry heavy materials, bend, climb ladders, crawl, work in confined spaces, etc.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Good communication skills (oral, written) and ability to interact with internal teams, contractors, inspectors, and customers.
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to ensure compliance with codes, permits, and regulations.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team, prioritize tasks, and manage time effectively.
Working Conditions:

- Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments, often in cramped or confined spaces, trenches, and manholes.
- Exposure to varying weather, noise, dust, fumes, chemicals, and potential hazards common in plumbing work.
- Requires the ability to lift heavy items (e.g. pipes, tools) and perform physically demanding tasks (bending, climbing, kneeling).
- May require work during nights, weekends, or on-call duty for emergencies.
- Use of PPE and adherence to safety regulations obligatory.
