Summary

The Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation (BNYDC) is a not-for-profit corporation that serves as the real estate developer and property manager of the Yard on behalf of its owner, the City of New York.

 

We are seeking an experienced Plumber (Mechanic A) to join our Property Management team. They are responsible for installing, repairing, and maintaining plumbing, steam, drainage, sewage, and mechanical systems across our 300-acre campus. They must be a highly skilled tradesperson who can work independently, troubleshoot complex systems, and ensure that all building infrastructure remains safe, compliant, and fully operational.

 

Areas of Responsibility

 

Plumbing and Mechanical Systems

  • Install, repair, and maintain plumbing networks including pipes, valves, risers, fixtures, water heaters, tanks, compressors, ejector and sump pumps, meters, and related controls
  • Perform troubleshooting and corrective action on complex systems with limited supervision
  • Work with pneumatic and digital control valves, pressure/temperature sensors, and basic BAS integration

Water-side HVAC Systems

  • Service condenser, chilled, and heating hot water systems including valves, strainers, risers, and expansion tanks
  • Support cooling tower and air handler piping infrastructure

Steam and Piping Systems

  • Repair and maintain steam distribution systems including PRVs, traps, condensate pumps, and high/low-pressure piping
  • Inspect and maintain hydrants, RPZs, check valves, water mains (above and below grade), standpipes, sprinklers, and fire pump connections
  • Perform testing such as hydrostatic and flow per FDNY/DOB code
  • Maintain RPZ backflow preventers to comply with DEP certification requirements

Fabrication and Hot Work

  • Cut, thread, groove, solder, braze, and weld black iron, copper, and steel pipe
  • Ensure compliance with FDNY permits and safety standards for torch operations

Compliance and Documentation

  • Adhere to NYC building codes, OSHA, FDNY, and DEP standards for all tasks
  • Document inspections, repairs, and modifications in work order systems (CMMS)

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals
  • Demonstrated proficiency in NYC plumbing, building, and fire codes
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize multiple tasks, and respond to planned and emergency conditions
  • Familiarity with workflow applications e.g. Facility Manager and Angus
  • Experience coordinating with contractors and tenant improvement projects preferred
  • Ability to lift 50+ pounds, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces and outdoors in all weather conditions

Qualifications

  • Completion of accredited plumbing trade school or apprenticeship program
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred
  • 5+ years of plumbing/mechanical experience. Large-scale facility or campus experience preferred
  • Valid driver’s license required
  • G-60 Torch Use of Flammable Gas certificate
  • F-60 Fire Guard for Torch Operations certificate
  • NYC DEP certification for Backflow Prevention testing/repair preferred
  • Must be available to participate in an on-call rotation and respond to emergency call-ins
