Laborer – Civil Concrete Construction

Position Scope

The Union Laborer supports civil concrete construction projects by performing a wide range of physical and skilled labor tasks. This role assists concrete crews with site preparation, forming, placing, finishing, and cleanup while maintaining a safe, productive job site in compliance with union rules and safety regulations.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist with concrete operations including forming, pouring, placing, spreading, vibrating, and curing concrete
  • Prepare job sites by clearing debris, setting up work areas, and installing erosion or traffic control measures
  • Handle, load, unload, and distribute materials, tools, and equipment
  • Assist form setters and finishers with formwork, rebar placement, and stripping forms
  • Operate hand tools and basic power tools (e.g., shovels, jackhammers, saws, compactors)
  • Perform demolition, excavation, trenching, and backfilling as needed
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work site
  • Follow all OSHA, company, and union safety standards
  • Work effectively as part of a crew under the direction of a foreman or superintendent

Education and Work Experience

  • Union membership (or ability to join the appropriate laborers’ union)
  • Prior experience in civil, concrete, or heavy construction preferred
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work in varying weather conditions
  • Strong work ethic, reliability, and teamwork skills
  • Willingness to follow instructions and safety procedures

Knowledge, Skills, and Responsibilities

  • Ability to lift and carry heavy materials (often 50+ lbs)
  • Prolonged standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and climbing
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions

Work Environment

  • Active civil construction sites such as roads, bridges, utilities, foundations, and infrastructure projects
  • Exposure to noise, dust, heavy equipment, and changing weather conditions
  • Ability to travel throughout Midwest as needed
