Position Summary

The Heavy Equipment Mechanic is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and performing preventive maintenance on a wide range of heavy equipment used in landfill, transfer station, and hauling operations. This includes loaders, excavators, dozers, compactors, and other off-road equipment.

This is a hands-on role requiring strong mechanical, hydraulic, and troubleshooting skills in a fast-paced, safety-focused environment.

Key Responsibilities

Equipment Maintenance & Repair

  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and pneumatic systems on heavy equipment
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance (PMs) according to manufacturer and company guidelines
  • Repair or replace engines, transmissions, drivetrains, braking systems, and steering components
  • Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic systems (pumps, cylinders, valves, hoses)
  • Conduct inspections to identify wear, safety concerns, and potential failures 

Field & Shop Support

  • Perform repairs in shop, yard, landfill, or onsite field environments
  • Respond to equipment breakdowns to minimize downtime
  • Operate diagnostic tools, service equipment, and shop machinery
  • Maintain accurate work orders, maintenance logs, and inspection records
  • Keep work areas clean, organized, and compliant with safety standards 

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow all company safety policies, OSHA guidelines, and PPE requirements
  • Ensure all equipment is safe and operational before returning to service
  • Participate in safety meetings, inspections, and training programs
  • Support DOT and internal compliance standards as applicable 

Qualifications

Required

  • 2+ years of experience repairing heavy equipment, diesel equipment, or similar machinery
  • Strong knowledge of: 
  • Diesel engines
  • Hydraulics
  • Mechanical systems
  • Ability to read and interpret manuals, schematics, and diagnostic tools
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions

Preferred

  • Experience in waste, landfill, construction, or industrial equipment environments
  • Welding and fabrication experience
  • Experience with loaders, dozers, excavators, compactors, or off-road equipment
  • Technical or vocational training in diesel or heavy equipment mechanics

Work Environment

  • Combination of shop, yard, and field work
  • Exposure to heavy equipment, moving machinery, noise, dust, and outdoor conditions
  • Physical demands include lifting, bending, climbing, and working in varied conditions
