Position Summary
The Heavy Equipment Mechanic is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and performing preventive maintenance on a wide range of heavy equipment used in landfill, transfer station, and hauling operations. This includes loaders, excavators, dozers, compactors, and other off-road equipment.
This is a hands-on role requiring strong mechanical, hydraulic, and troubleshooting skills in a fast-paced, safety-focused environment.
Key Responsibilities
Equipment Maintenance & Repair
- Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and pneumatic systems on heavy equipment
- Perform routine preventive maintenance (PMs) according to manufacturer and company guidelines
- Repair or replace engines, transmissions, drivetrains, braking systems, and steering components
- Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic systems (pumps, cylinders, valves, hoses)
- Conduct inspections to identify wear, safety concerns, and potential failures
Field & Shop Support
- Perform repairs in shop, yard, landfill, or onsite field environments
- Respond to equipment breakdowns to minimize downtime
- Operate diagnostic tools, service equipment, and shop machinery
- Maintain accurate work orders, maintenance logs, and inspection records
- Keep work areas clean, organized, and compliant with safety standards
Safety & Compliance
- Follow all company safety policies, OSHA guidelines, and PPE requirements
- Ensure all equipment is safe and operational before returning to service
- Participate in safety meetings, inspections, and training programs
- Support DOT and internal compliance standards as applicable
Qualifications
Required
- 2+ years of experience repairing heavy equipment, diesel equipment, or similar machinery
- Strong knowledge of:
- Diesel engines
- Hydraulics
- Mechanical systems
- Ability to read and interpret manuals, schematics, and diagnostic tools
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
Preferred
- Experience in waste, landfill, construction, or industrial equipment environments
- Welding and fabrication experience
- Experience with loaders, dozers, excavators, compactors, or off-road equipment
- Technical or vocational training in diesel or heavy equipment mechanics
Work Environment
- Combination of shop, yard, and field work
- Exposure to heavy equipment, moving machinery, noise, dust, and outdoor conditions
- Physical demands include lifting, bending, climbing, and working in varied conditions
