Position Overview
The Director of Construction (DOC) leads all field operations with a focus on strategy, execution, and profitability. This role is accountable for ensuring all construction projects are completed on schedule, within budget, and to the highest standards of quality and safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining extremely organized operations across all jobs, fostering a culture of accountability, and ensuring client satisfaction. Reporting directly to the Vice President of Operations, this role requires strong leadership, deep construction knowledge, and the ability to align cross-functional teams.
Key Responsibilities
Overall Project Leadership & Strategy
- Lead execution of all field operations with a focus on profitability and efficient delivery.
- Assign, develop, and manage Project Managers (PMs), setting clear expectations and holding them highly accountable.
- Cultivate a strong team culture, promote professional growth, and ensure performance standards are met across all job sites.
Scheduling & Execution
- Develop and maintain detailed construction schedules across all projects.
- Review timelines for accuracy and ensure alignment between field operations and project goals.
Client Relations
- Act as a high-level client-facing leader; collaborate closely with sales and design teams to ensure alignment with the client's vision.
- Clearly communicate updates, represent the company professionally in all situations, and ensure all clients feel valued.
Subcontractor Oversight
- Manage subcontractor selection, contract approvals, and execution oversight.
- Set clear expectations and ensure subcontractors represent the company at a high standard.
Budget & Financial Management
- Monitor and evaluate job budgets, subcontractor bids, and pricing strategies.
- Analyze job profitability, manage risk, and identify opportunities to increase revenue while reducing financial loss due to errors.
Quality, Safety & Compliance
- Enforce Well Done's standards for quality craftsmanship and safety on all job sites.
- Lead monthly safety meetings and provide continual feedback to PMs to ensure job sites remain safe, clean, and in compliance with regulations.
Technology & Reporting
- Use BuilderTrend with a high level of proficiency for scheduling, job walks, punch lists, KPI tracking, and client updates.
- Report to the Vice President of Operations and ensure alignment across departments through clear and consistent communication.
Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of experience in residential construction; General Contractor (GC) license preferred.
- Proven leadership skills in managing teams, subcontractors, and multiple high-end construction projects.
- Strong business acumen with the ability to evaluate profitability and drive strategic decisions.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, especially in client-facing situations.
- Deep understanding of scheduling, budgeting, and quality assurance in construction.
- High proficiency in construction management software (BuilderTrend strongly preferred).
- Knowledge of safety regulations and job site best practices.
